Houston Elementary, and Middle School use the Accelerated Reader program. Accelerated Reader is a national reading motivation program used by more than 30,000 schools nationwide. Accelerated Reader gets students excited about books and reading.
Students begin by using a computer program called S.T.A.R. which assesses their reading level. Students then choose a book from a list of more than 12,000 titles on the Accelerated Reader book list which is in their reading range. These titles range from 1st through 12th grade reading level. After reading the book, students take a computerized quiz on the book which tests his or her recall of key characters, incidents, and information. The short quiz is designed to be mastered easily by any student who has read the book with comprehension.
Depending on the difficulty and reading level of the book, students are awarded points for those questions they answer correctly on the computerized quiz. These points can then be used as the basis for a motivation and incentive system. Accelerated Reader allows teachers to print reports that track the progress of students as well as keep parents up to date on how student are progressing.
