HHS Clubs and Organizations 2011-2012

Community Betterment - (Maggie Jadwin) Houston Community Betterment Youth are under the organization of the Community Betterment and Arts Council of Houston. This organization is open to students in grades 9-12.  Community Betterment Youth focuses on community service projects or assisting in community service activities. In the past students have participated in the Hospice Chili Cook off, chamber banquet, Mayors prayer breakfast, MCB conference in Jefferson City.

FCCLA, Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America- (Michelle Brinkley) is the group associated with Family and Consumer Science. At this time we attend our region meetings and would like to have the chance to attend regional and state contest.  We do a couple of different fundraisers one being selling the Crushes at Valentines.  We also sponsor the Battle of the Belt program with the seat belt checks.  Students have the chance to win a trip to Jefferson City for a legislative shadowing experience.

Math/Science Club- (Diane Moore)The purpose of math/science club is to promote interest in all areas of math and science.   We participate in math and science competitions and try to meet monthly or bi-monthly.   We plan a fall activity, winter activity and a spring activity.   Activities we have participated in the past include:   visiting a corn maze, ice skating, Silver Dollar City, Six Flags, nature hike with zip line. 

WYSE- (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering)- (Diane Moore)this is a math/science competition which usually involves upper classmen.  It consists of a 14 member team who compete against other schools at Regional, Sectional and State levels based on placement.  The team is fielded based on academic performance, commitment, and responsibility.   See Mrs. Moore if you are interested in trying out for the team.

Envirothon- (Angie Barnes and Randi Wilson)The Envirothon Competition is a problem solving natural resource competition for high school students in grades 9-12.  Teams of students are tested on their knowledge of a state's natural resources:  soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and a current conservation issue.

Students visit five "in-the-field" test stations where written and hands-on problem solving is required.  In addition, each team gives an oral presentation to a panel of judges addressing the current conservation issue for the year. 

There is a 2-team limit of 5 people each for each school.

The Chess and Checkers (cha-cha) Club- (Pat Oakley)this club will meet on Thursdays after school, until 4:15 pm, in Mrs. Oakley's room in the vocational building.  This club will be for anyone who enjoys either game.  If you like to play either game, stop on by!  There's no competition; it's all for fun!!

FCA- (Sandy Cremer) -Fellowship of Christian Athletes is the largest Christian sports organization in America.  FCA focuses on serving our school and our community by equipping, empowering, and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ.  Our relationships demonstrate steadfast commitment to Jesus Christ and His Word through Integrity, Service, Teamwork, and Excellence.

FCA meets bi-monthly in the mornings before school.  Huddles consist of fellowship, devotion, ministry, and often breakfast.  During each huddle we combine a passion for sports with a passion for Christ, and teach that those two worlds don’t have to be separate.

Art Club- (Mrs. Keller)if you love art you will enjoy Art Club.  Art Club is open to students’ grade 9 - 12. Our goal at our meetings is to create fabulous art.  Some of our artwork is sold to pay for Art related field trips. We also like to share our artwork with the community. We hope you will bring your talents and join us.

Literary Society- (Ms. Antrim) is for students who like all components of literacy.  There will be book clubs, Poetry Slams, Author's Chair, and many more opportunities to explore literature. 

National Forensic League (a.k.a. Speech, Debate, Drama Club)- (Mrs. Chambers) The Houston Speech and Debate Team is the Houston High School Competitive Speech and Debate Program, sometimes referred to as competitive forensics or the NFL.  Competitive individual events (speech or drama) and debate are the focus for students participating in this program. All events are sanctioned by the National Forensic League (NFL) and the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA).

Academic Team- (Mr. Wilbanks) The academic team is a competitive team where groups of students with buzzers compete to answer trivia-like questions for points. The team will travel to a number of competitions including districts. Practice will include once a week meetings after school starting in late September or early October.

Student Council- (Mr. Wright)Student Council is a representative organization, through which students can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school administration, staff, and the community for the benefit of the school and its students.  It sponsors and raises funds for school-wide activities, including social events, community projects, and school improvements.  Some activities sponsored by Student Council are Homecoming, King of the Court, Hoop Queen, Mr. HHS, Battle of the Classes, and the Thanksgiving Food Drive.

Political Science Club- (Mr. Wright)The Political Science Club works to expand student knowledge of and participation in the political process at the local, state, and national levels.  It is open to any student interested in government and the political process.

Pep Club- (Sandy Cremer)Pep Club is open to all students who are interested in promoting school spirit. The Pep Club makes signs and banners and dress up to help support athletics and other students who are representing the school in a wide variety of activities.  Club members must pay dues.

Foreign Language Club- (Mildred White)The Foreign Language Club participates in cultural events which come within driving distance of our area.  These events feature lifestyle and traditions of Hispanics, French, German or other sectors of people who have made an impact in the area of Missouri and Texas County.  Tentatively two trips are scheduled this year:  World Fest at Silver Dollar City and Branson Zip line both on Saturdays.  Also many fiestas take place on Saturdays.  The Club also sponsors a scholarship for students finishing 4 years of Spanish in good standing and has an interest to pursue study of the language or jobs/careers which work with other races of citizens.

FBLA - (George Snelling) FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) is an organization established to help students gain leadership skills in a fun and exciting environment. Members are involved in competitive events, travel, service projects, and social events.  FBLA activities include, Race Into Reading, Chili Cook-Off, Funtastic Days, as well as District and State contests, just to name a few.

Skills USA- (TJ Hinkle) SkillsUSA prepares America's high performance workers. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills. It emphasizes total quality at work, high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA also promotes understanding of the free enterprise system and involvement in community service activities.

FFA- (Van Kirkwood) The FFA (Future Farmers of America) is a national organization dedicated to preparing members for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture. Local, state and national activities and award programs provide opportunities to apply knowledge and skills acquired through agriculture education.  FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.  The FFA is only open to those students enrolled in an agriculture class.

National Honor Society- (Sherry Gatlin)is a service organization for involved students with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5.  We have a club project to help children in the "Share Your Christmas" project and then each member completes 10 hours of unpaid service for the community or an individual during the year.  The goal is to make students aware of the opportunities to contribute to their community both now and as adults.  Meetings are as necessary. Admission to NHS is by application, during the sophomore year which will be judged by a committee of teachers.  Membership looks good on a college and job applications.
