Houston Schools Technology Director, Mr. Ken Kautzman, brings a Legacy of Thomas Hart Benton to the classroom through his father's paintings.
 |
| Painting of William F. Kautzman, painted by a student he mentored. |
Ken Kautzman gave a presentation about his dad, William F. Kautzman, to Ms. Morgan's sixth grade language arts students on September 18. William Kautzman was Thomas Hart Benton's art student in 1940-41 and received compliments and recommendations from him. While viewing Kautzman's paintings, the students were able to see similarities between Benton's and Kautzman's landscapes and clouds. Both painters were regionalist artists.
The students enjoyed looking at Kautzman's egg tempra painting that has magnificent colors (powder colors mixed with egg yolks used for the paint), unlike any used today. The beautiful painting is called The Kitchen, and it is the kitchen in the house where Ken grew up.
The class is learning to use descriptive words well by describing Kautzman's lithograph, Thief in the Corn. It is a farm scene with Ken Kautzman's grandfather, Lewis Pounds, driving his team of mules pulling a wagon full of corn across the field on his farm. It also has a chicken stealing corn from a basket, and that is how it got its name.
William Kautzman received numerous awards for his paintings. He also served on the Baptist Sunday School Board and was the supervisor of advertising and layout for the Baptist Board (the largest publisher of religious materials in the world) in Nashville, Tennessee. Mr. Kautzman is 96 years old and still resides in Nashville.

The Parent Portal on the Houston Schools website is now up and active. All parents/guardians who filled out a parent portal agreement and have a valid email on file with the district should have received a password that allows them to review information about their child: lunch account balances, grades (including specific assignments and how students scored on each assignment), attendance, and fines & fees. The old system required the district to upload information to be viewed. That only happened once a week. Information in the new Parent Portal is "live" as it is entered into the system. As the year progresses and we continue to learn our new student information systems program, we hope to open more information screens on the Parent Portal.
If you did not sign up for the Parent Portal and would like to, please contact the curriculum office at 417-967-3024 ext. 9443. Parents/guardians can sign up any time during the school year.
