Welcome to Houston Middle School
**Updated Middle School Tardy Policy
It is with great excitement and tremendous confidence that this school year will be one of the most memorable and productive years. I believe middle school is the crucial stage in the life of a student because this is when he/she begins autonomy and adulthood. It is also a very critical link to the successful transition to high school and higher education.
The Houston Middle School teacher and support staff work in partnership to provide a rigorous and challenging curriculum. To meet the developmental needs of the student, we provide a curriculum dedicated to history/social science, mathematics, physical education, reading/language arts, and science. Instruction at HMS is grounded in state-of-the-art research-based practices. We are proud to be constantly looking for improvement and positive change as we advance into the technological world. The curriculum of Houston Middle School encourages the student to become inquisitive, to grasp a wide variety of academic skills, and to become a productive young adult. The Houston Middle School student will be challenged to meet high expectations using the skills of reading, writing, and speaking.
The schedule at Houston Middle School has been constructed in recognition of the fact that we as people do not all learn at the same pace. We believe that with proper challenges, encouragement, and feedback, the student will be able to reach his/her potential. We have devoted one hundred and eight minutes a week to provide the student an opportunity to demonstrate mastery as well as receive additional instruction in the areas most needed.
HMS, along with the shared responsibility of our community, will provide a safe learning environment that promotes respect for each other, motivates the student to reach his/her academic potential, and challenges the student to behave responsibly.
Sincerely,
Jeremie Akins, Principal Houston Middle School
