Houston Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, or FCCLA, enjoyed a day in Springfield recently. Students worked at the Ronald McDonald house that morning by cleaning, pulling weeds and fixing brunch for the families that are staying there. The Ronald McDonald house is a home away from home for families with children in the hospitals. Families are able to stay at the house free of charge, with the typical stay being 19 nights. FCCLA's central focus is families, so this was a perfect opportunity for our members to serve and help families.
After the visit to the Ronald McDonald house, students participated in a Clue themed Escape room. They had one hour to finish the challenge. Advisor Wytney Steelman was able to watch the students as they worked together to solve the mystery. "It is remarkable to see students leadership qualities and how they are able to work together for a common purpose. It was great seeing them as a team."
The 2016-2017 year has been a busy, yet successful year for FCCLA. We had students place at regional and state competitions, several service projects and most importantly, leadership skills were learned.
